IL: 1 airlifted following multi-vehicle wreck on Route 37 in Jefferson County

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL – An 80-year-old woman from Mt. Vernon, Illinois, had to be flown to a hospital last Thursday afternoon, May 9, near Opdyke that left at least one other person hurt, reports WJBD.

The collision took place at the intersection of Route 37 and Davis Road, at about 2:18 p.m.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, an 82-year-old Walnut Hill woman was driving southbound when she made a left turn in the path of a northbound vehicle driven by the Mt. Vernon woman. The impact from that crash sent the Mt. Vernon woman’s vehicle crashing into another southbound vehicle driven by a 44-year-old Salem woman.

First responders rushed the Mt. Vernon woman by airlift to a St. Louis Hospital for undisclosed injuries.

Officials said the Walnut Hill woman, whose injuries also remain unclear, was taken by ground ambulance to a hospital in Mt. Vernon.

The woman from Salem declined medical attention following the crash.
