IL: 1 dead, 1 left injured after pickup truck runs stop sign at Effingham County intersection

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, IL – A 44-year-old woman from Saint Elmo died as a result of a multi-vehicle crash Monday afternoon northeast of Altamont, according to Effingham Radio.

Illinois State Police Troop 9 Units were dispatched to the scene at U.S. Route 40 and North 450th Street, in Mound Township, some time after 2:45 p.m.

A preliminary investigation found that a 54-year-old Brownstown man was driving a yellow 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck southbound on North 450th Street and approaching US-40 when the vehicle collided with two other vehicles at the intersection: a red 2018 Chevrolet Equinox traveling east on US-40, and a white 2009 Dodge van head west in the area.

While the driver of the Chevrolet pickup was not reported hurt, the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, a 34-year-old man from Altamont, was rushed to an area hospital with unspecified injuries.

The driver of the Dodge van, a 44-year-old Saint Elmo woman, was also rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.

Officials confirmed the driver of the Chevrolet pickup received a citation for Disobeying a Stop Sign. No other charges have been reported at this time.

The emergency response had the roadway shut down, but the closure was lifted at about 6:40 p.m.
