IL: 1 dead, 2 left injured after 2-vehicle crash at Jackson County intersection

JACKSON COUNTY, IL — A 34-year-old man died following a collision last Thursday, February 15, on Old Highway 13 near Carbondale, according to WSILTV.

The fatal accident unfolded near Wood Road at about 1:51 p.m. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the scene where one of the two involved vehicles had overturned, trapping at least two people inside.

A preliminary investigation indicates a 34-year-old, of Murphysboro, was driving a black 2020 Alfa Romeo westbound on Old Highway 13. At one point, a 45-year-old, of Carbondale, was leaving a private driveway in a white 2010 Toyota Corolla.

Authorities said the Corolla pulled into the highway and in the Alfa Romeo’s path, causing the vehicles to collide. The Alfa Romeo, who lost control after the initial impact, struck a utility pole and overturned.

EMS crews had to extricate the driver and his passenger before rushing both patients, along with the other driver, to a local hospital.

Officials confirmed that the driver was later pronounced deceased.

The Corolla driver was released from the hospital following treatment. The passenger, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was also treated for injuries considered non-life-threatening.

The JCSO’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate.
