IL: 1 dead, several left hurt after head-on crash on US-51 in Perry County

PERRY COUNTY, IL — One person lost their life Sunday afternoon as a result of a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 51 in south Du Quoin, reports WSILTV.

Illinois State Police said the fatal accident took place on a stretch of US-51 just south of South Madison Street, shortly after 5:00 p.m.

A preliminary investigation found that one vehicle was traveling southbound on the highway when, for reasons still unclear, it went past the center line and entered the opposing lane. The car then collided head-on with a northbound vehicle.

One person succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Officials did not immediately say whether the victim was a driver or a passenger.

Multiple other people were transported to an area hospital for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

Authorities continue to investigate.
