IL: 2 dead, 3 left hurt after head-on crash on IL-159 in Madison County

MADISON COUNTY, IL – Two people lost their lives Sunday afternoon, April 7, due to a two-vehicle collision on Illinois Route 159 near Edwardsville, according to My Journal Courier.

Illinois State Police said the accident took place south of Route 140 at around 12:58 p.m.

An early investigation found that a 91-year-old St. Louis woman was driving a 2006 Nissan Sentra northbound on IL-159 at the same time a 2019 Dodge van was traveling southbound on the same road. At one point, the Sentra veered past the center line and collided head-on with the Dodge van.

The driver of the Nissan was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed officials.

The driver of the Dodge van, a 37-year-old Carlinville man, was flown to an area hospital where his condition remains unclear.

One passenger in the Dodge, a 63-year-old Bloomingdale woman, was rushed to a local hospital in life-threatening condition. Officials confirmed she died from her injuries upon arrival.

Another passenger in the Dodge, a 40-year-old woman from Carlinville, was also transported to a regional hospital for unspecified injuries, while a 7-year-old girl from the same vehicle was taken by airlift to a regional hospital, also with unknown injuries.

Part of the road was shut down during the response and investigation but was reopened by about 4:00 p.m.
