IL: 3 critically hurt in head-on crash on US-51 near Patoka

MARION COUNTY, IL — Three people, including a child, suffered life-threatening injuries late Tuesday afternoon due to a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 51 near north Patoka, according to WJBD.

Illinois State Police said the collision occurred about a quarter mile north of Kinoka Road and a little south of Patoka Tank Farm. It was first reported at about 4:43 p.m.

An early investigation found that a 20-year-old Walnut Hill resident, was driving when his vehicle collided head-on with a vehicle driven by a 59-year-old Vandalia resident.

First responders had both drivers and a 5-year-old passenger all transported by ambulance to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia, but the patients were all later airlifted to other hospitals in the region.

Part of the roadway was shut down for an extended time as the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, crews with Patoka and Sandoval Fire and Ambulance, and United Medical Response personnel all responded.
