IL: Head-on collision claims lives of drivers on US-51 in Washington County

WASHINGTON COUNTY, IL — Two people lost their lives Sunday night as a result of a wrong-way crash on U.S. Highway 51 in Irvington, according to WSILTV.

The fatal accident was reported on a stretch of US-51 near South 7th Street Road at around 9:20 p.m.

An early investigation by the Illinois State Police indicates a 43-year-old, of Woodlawn, was operating a Ford Mustang southbound in the northbound side of the highway. The Ford ultimately collided head-on with a 2022 Chevrolet Malibu driven by a 26-year-old, of Decatur.

Both drivers were pronounced deceased on the scene by first responders, confirmed officials.

An investigation into the cause of the accident remains in progress.
