ALEXANDER COUNTY, IL — A 25-year-old man lost his life on Monday evening, February 19, due to a pedestrian collision on Interstate 57 near northwest Cairo, reports KFVS12.

The fatal incident took place on the northbound side of I-57 near mile post 1, south of Mississippi Levee Road. It was first reported at about 8:47 p.m.

Illinois State Police said the man was walking in the northbound interstate’s left lane when he was hit by a truck-tractor and semi-trailer combination that was heading northbound.

First responders pronounced the male pedestrian deceased at the scene.

It’s unclear why the victim was in the roadway, and whether the driver remained at the scene.

Part of I-57 was shut down during the response but was reopened at about 12:48 a.m., more than four hours after the initial report.
