ST. LOUIS, MO – The Missouri State Highway Patrol said four people died in a wreck involving a wrong-way driver along Interstate 170 on Monday afternoon, according to KSDK.
The incident took place in the northbound lanes of I-170 near the exit ramp for Interstate 70 westbound shortly after 1 p.m.
The MSHP’s initial investigation found that an 88-year-old St. Louis man was driving his 2017 Chevrolet Equinox south in the northbound lane on I-170 and collided head-on with a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The impact caused the Jeep to overturn. A car then struck the Equinox while another vehicle hit the Jeep.
The driver of the Equinox died after being taken to an area hospital. Three people in the Jeep were also killed: a 60-year-old man from St. Albans, a 65-year-old man from Hazelwood and a 69-year-old woman from Hazelwood.
The interstate was shut down in the area for about five hours during the accident response and investigation.
