STL: Driver dies after rollover crash involving big rig on I-270 near Kirkwood

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO — A 65-year-old man from Chesterfield died Saturday afternoon after his car collided with a tractor-trailer and overturned near Kirkwood, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The accident happened on the northbound lanes of I-270 approaching Dougherty Ferry Road, in an area just southwest of St. Louis. It was first reported at 12:24 p.m.

Officials indicated that the victim was driving a 2016 Kia Soul northbound in lane #4 when he tried to merge into lane #3, where a 1999 Freightliner Conventional was also traveling northbound. The Kia’s left rear subsequently hit the front-end of the Freightliner, and the force of the impact sent the Kia into the concrete center median, causing it to then overturn.

First responders rushed the victim to Mercy Hospital St. Louis. At 12:29 p.m. that afternoon, he was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Freightliner, a 59-year-old man from Columbia, Illinois, was not reported hurt.
