EDWARDSVILLE, IL – A driver fleeing from police was killed in a crash at a business in Edwardsville late Sunday night, KSDK reported.
Illinois State Police said that the incident began when a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus police officer tried to stop the driver of a Chevrolet truck at about 11 p.m. According to investigators, the man had been driving unsafely on New Poag Road and then traveled the wrong way on SIU Northern Access Road.
When the driver did not stop, the officer began a pursuit that went through Edwardsville. The Chevrolet driver lost control of the vehicle while driving at high speed and crashed into Redmon Insurance Agency on South Main Street.
The driver, a 24-year-old man from Hamel, died at the scene. No police officers were injured, and no one was in the building at the time.
ISP are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
