STL: Man Pleads Guilty in DWI Crash That Killed St. Louis Police Officer

ST. LOUIS, MO – A man has pleaded guilty in connection with an accident that claimed the life of a St. Louis police officer last year, according to Fox 2 Now.

24-year-old Ramon Chavez-Rodriguez entered the plea on Tuesday to a felony charge of DWI (causing death of law enforcement) and a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle on a highway without a valid license.

The victim of the Sept. 22, 2024 incident was Officer David Lee, an 18-year-veteran of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.  Lee had responded to a previous crash on Interstate 70 and was placing cones to direct traffic when authorities said he was struck by a vehicle driven by Chavez-Rodriguez.  The driver was initially charged with driving while intoxicated, exceeding the speed limit, and driving without a valid license.

No sentencing date has been set yet for Chavez-Rodriguez, who faces 5 to 15 years in prison.

“The tragic killing of Officer Lee had a devastating impact on the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the St. Louis community,” said Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore in a statement to FOX 2. “Officer Lee devoted 18 years to protecting this city and its residents. Though no court outcome can heal the pain of his loss, his legacy of service and sacrifice will endure.”
