Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy Explained

Cerebral palsy can either be congenital or acquired. Congenital cerebral palsy is present from the moment of your child’s birth and can be caused by factors such as an abnormality during your child’s brain’s development or a fetal stroke.

Acquired cerebral palsy happens after the child is born and can result from trauma to the brain. A birth injury, trauma sustained in a car accident, or other similar events can cause your child to develop cerebral palsy.

A diagnosis can be made following evaluation and imaging of your child’s brain. Symptoms can appear during infancy, but your child may not be officially diagnosed until they are preschool-age.

Complications From Cerebral Palsy

No matter how your child’s cerebral palsy develops, it is a condition that will impact them for the remainder of their life. Your child may experience:

  • Trouble eating and speaking
  • Spasms and epilepsy
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Challenges with hearing and seeing
  • Bowel obstruction and constipation

There is no cure for cerebral palsy, so treatment consists primarily of therapies and surgeries designed to help your child gain and retain functionality.
